Sony plans to use OLED panels made by Samsung Electronics for its Bravia flat panel TV series as of early 2013, which will pose challenges for Taiwanese firms.
Sony was originally going to cooperate with AU Optronics (AUO) on large-size OLED panels but AUO has stated that it wants to focus more on the 32-inch segment and that it will not have large-size OLED products until the end of the year, added the sources.
While there is yet to be an official statement by Sony and Samsung, the two companies have already worked together on small and medium-sized panels when Sony's PS Vita came out in late 2011 featuring a 5-inch AMOLED panel, which makes future cooperation very promising, according to the sources.
Furthermore, Panasonic is planning on investing US$250-370 million on production equipment for its 5G and 6G OLED panel lines and hopes that it will mass produce large-size terminal display products before 2014. Sources said this along with Philips planning to release white light OLED TV products in cooperation with LG will present difficulties for Taiwan LED firms in the future.
However, Taiwanese firms pointed out that it is still too early to speculate due to the high costs of OLED products such as large-size TVs ranging from US$8,000-10,000 while LCD TVs are still at the US$1,000-2,000 dollar range.
