Research in Motion (RIM) has unveiled its BlackBerry 10 platform at BlackBerry World 2012, paving the way for the smartphone vendor to launch BlackBerry 10-based models before the end of the year.
The BlackBerry 10 incorporates some features of RIM's QNX-based Playbook OS 2.0 and BlackBerry 7 OS, supporting multiple processing tasks, enhanced security, touch screen capability and also stressing on virtual keyboard and camera functions.
CEO Thorsten Heins stressed that the BlackBerry 10 is not just a platform for smartphones but also for tablet PCs, and for other segments, including the in-car telematics and embedded applications.
Nearly 60% of in-car telematics systems in use currently is based on QNX software system, and RIM has teamed up with Porsche for the development of new platforms for telematics devices, Heins revealed.
Heins also continued to tout the merits of the BlackBerry platforms, indicating that the ratio for BlackBerry users to utilize social networking media on a daily basis is up to 88% compared to an average of 63% for all smartphone users.
Furthermore, 91% of BlackBerry users access to business tools available on the system per day compared to a ratio of 65% for all types of smartphone users, Heins revealed.
Since a number of hardware developers have expressed strong interest in the BlackBerry 10 on the sidelines of the BlackBerry World, it is possible for RIM to license its new platform to those developers so that it can expand the ecosystem of the BlackBerry 10, while opening up a new source of income, according to industry sources.
