AMD Hondo-based products to be launched in mid-November at the earliest
AMD announced the release of Hondo APUs specifically designed for use in tablets in late October, launches of products with the APUs will not begin until mid-November.
The sources pointed out that vendors' new tablet projects are mainly focusing on ARM/Android or Intel/Windows 8 combinations; therefore, tablets with AMD platforms are unlikely to appear until a later time.
As for AMD's director of Global Product Marketing John Taylor's recent estimate that a Hondo-based tablet should not have a price of more than US$899, the sources pointed out that Asustek's Windows RT tablet is expected to be priced between US$599-699 and Microsoft's Surface will also put strong pressure on the pricing of Windows 8 tablets; therefore, US$899 is still not friendly enough and US$699-799 will be the best price range for Hondo-based machines.
AMD recently announced its Hondo-based Z-60 APU, which adopts a 40nm process and Brazos architecture. The APU consumes 4.5W and is capable of being adopted in a 10mm thick tablet, supporting Windows 8 and resolutions up to 1920 by 1200. Since Z-60 only has average power consumption, the sources believe AMD's next-generation 28nm Jaguar-based SoC, Tamesh, which is set to launch in the second quarter of 2013, should provide a better chance for the CPU maker to compete on a level playing field
