TSMC reports record 3Q12 sales

Tuesday, October 16, 2012

Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) climbed to a record NT$141.375 billion (US$4.84 billion) in the third quarter of 2012.

TSMC's sales were driven by brisk demand for chips used in smartphones, tablets and other mobile devices during the third quarter. Demand from the sector, however, is slowing down while demand for PC-use ICs remains sluggish, the sources observed.

PC-related IC suppliers have seen downstream customers postpone their ordering plans, and therefore revised downward their shipments for the fourth quarter, the sources noted. Brand PC vendors and manufacturers are carefully controling their inventory as the end of the year is approaching, the sources said.

TSMC has not provided its financial guidance for the fourth quarter. At the company's investors meeting in July, chairman and CEO Morris Chang commented that sales might register sequential dips in the fourth quarter and first-quarter 2013.

TSMC is scheduled to hold its quarterly investors meeting on October 25 to discuss its performance during the third quarter and guidance for the fourth quarter.
