LG predicts smartphone shipments increase in 3rd Q

Thursday, October 25, 2012

South Korea-based LG Electronics has reported smartphone shipments in the third quarter accounted for more than 50% of total mobile phone shipments. LG has been focusing on LTE smartphones and has been seeing shipments increase in markets such as South Korea, the US and Japan.

LG's handset department reported a net loss in the second quarter of 2012, but returned to profitability in the third quarter. The firm will introduce Google's fourth-generation Nexus smartphone in the fourth quarter and strives to maintain its profitability.

LG has been struggling to increase market share for its smartphones as competitors like Samsung Electronics dominate the market. Nevertheless, LG saw shipments increase in the third quarter. Shipments of the firm's mid-range and high-end Optimus series, emphasizing LTE, and entry-level to mid-range L series have been growing. LG reported third-quarter smartphone shipments reached 7-8 million units, representing a 20% on-quarter increase.

According to Taiwan-based handset makers, Google's cooperation with LG is because the former hopes to support brands other than Samsung and HTC to create healthier competition among Android handset brands.

LG's 2012 smartphone shipment target is 30-35 million units, but total smartphone shipments in the first three quarters were less than 20 million units, hence the target is unlikely to be reached.
