Symantec has launched Backup Exec 3600, a Windows-based appliance with integrated software to provide cost-effective backup solutions, in the Taiwan market at prices of NT$1.08-1.80 million (US$36,900-61,400). Medium-size enterprise with 300-1,000 employees are its target customers, according to Symantec Taiwan.

Symantec used license its software products and allow customers to choose matched hardware, but if a problem happened, it took extra time to find out whether the hardware or the software was the source of the problem, Symantec Taiwan said.

Zero One Technology, Symantec's exclusive Taiwan sales agent, indicated that Backup Exec 3600 is suitable for enterprises with 15 servers and data storage of up to 5.5TB in hard disk.

For medium-size enterprises, Backup Exec 3600 appliances are quite expensive and licensing the Symantec software for use on suitable hardware is likely to cost much less, according to local providers of system integration services.
