Toshiba restarts Chip factory production

Wednesday, November 14, 2012

Toshiba resumed manufacturing at its chip plant in Pathumthani, Thailand in order to meet healthy demand for discrete products for smartphones and tablets, according to the Japan-based firm.

Production at the Pathumthani facility will continue normal operation until the opening of Toshiba's new chip plant in Purachinburi, the firm said.

Toshiba's chip plant in the Bangkadi Industrial Park, Pathunthani, was completely inundated during the floods in 2011 forcing suspension of operations. Assembly and packaging of small signal devices and photocouplers, which the facility handled, were transferred to other Toshiba facilities in Japan and Malaysia. Production was also outsourced as a means to respond to changes in demand, Toshbiba said.

In April 2012, Toshiba decided to relocate its operations to the 304 Industrial Park in Purachinburi, which is outside of Thailand's major flood plain, according to the firm. The new plant will start operations in spring 2013, the firm noted.
