Winbond Electronics has acquired a set of exposure equipment from Powerchip Technology for NT$630 million (US$21.7 million), according to a company filing with the Taiwan Stock Exchange (TSE).
Engaged in the development and manufacture of specialty DRAM, mobile RAM and NOR flash memory chips, Winbond is in the process of shifting production of specialty DRAM to 46nm process, and NOR flash to 58nm. The firm previously secured a syndicated loan of NT$5 billion from a consortium of 10 Taiwan banks.
Once known as a supplier of PC DRAM memory, Powerchip is looking to transform into a foundry chipmaker focused on non-DRAM products.
Powerchip previously revealed plans to sell its P3 12-inch plant, while continuing to operate the other two fabs, P1 and P2, which the company claims have been generating profits from the production of mainly non-memory ICs on a contract basis.
