More chipset vendors offering multi-core processor

Friday, January 11, 2013

Chipset vendors including Nvidia, Qualcomm, Samsung Electronics and ST-Ericsson have all unveiled their new multi-core solutions for mobile devices and other applications at CES 2013, heating up competition in the segment in the year, according to industry sources.

New mobile solutions being highlighted at the annual event include Nvidia's A15-based quad-core Tegra 5, Qualcomm's quad-core Snapdragon 800- and 600-series CPUs, and ST-Ericsson's quad-core NovaThor L8580 ModAp as well as Samsung Electronics' eight-core Exynos 5 Octa, which combines four ARM Cortex A15s and four ARM Cortex A7s.

The Exynos 5 Octa utilizes ARM's new big.LITTLE processor technology, with a quad-core 1.8GHz Cortex A15 for performance, and a quad-core 1.2GHz Cortex A7 to handle low-power common workloads, Stephen Woo, president of Samsung's device solutions unit, has announced at the CES.

Samsung's forthcoming Galaxy S IV smartphone, slated for the first half of 2013, is likely to be powered by a Exynos 5 Octa CPU, the sources speculated.

Qualcomm has announced its Krait 400-baded Snapdragon 800 and Krait 300-based Snapdragon 600 processors at the CES. The Snapdragon 800 processors are sampling now and expected to be available in commercial devices by mid-2013, Qualcomm said.

ST-Ericsson's NovaThor L8580 ModAp quad-core smartphone solution is built on ARM Cortex 9A running at 2.5GHz and supports LTE technology. ST-Ericsson will begin to deliver samples of the L8580 chips in the first quarter of 2013, the sources revealed.

Meanwhile, Huawei also plans to join the quad-core chip race by releasing its next-generation solution, the K3V3, in the second half of 2013, noted the sources.
