Huawei to flood Europe with lower-end smartphones

Tuesday, January 22, 2013

Huawei has unveiled yet another handset joining its Ascend line of smartphones: the quad-core Ascend G615, which will launch in Europe later in 2013.

Earlier this month, Huawei announced three new phones at CES 2013 - the Ascend Mate, Ascend D2 and Ascend W1 - all of which are set to help the Chinese company gain more ground in the mobile world.

The Ascend G615 sports a 4.5in IPS display with a 720p resolution. Under the hood, it’s powered by a quad-core 1.4GHz Hisilicon K3V2 processor with 1GB of RAM and 8GB of internal storage, though that’s expandable via a microSD slot. The handset ships with an 8-megapixel camera and a 1.3-megapixel front-facing shooter. Huawei promises the Ascend G615’s 2,150mAh battery can deliver up to 11 hours of talk time, though that claim remains to be tested.

The handset will be rolled out with Google’s last-generation Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich OS, though Huawei has confirmed that it will be upgraded to Android 4.1 Jelly Bean soon after its launch.

Details about availability are scarce, though the smartphone is due to be launched in Germany next month before making its appearance in other markets. The Ascend G615 will retail for 299 euros (£250), a price that, along with the device’s specs, suggest Huawei is gunning for the lower-end of the smartphone market.
