Powerchip to end Dram production by Q1,2013

Tuesday, February 12, 2013

Powerchip Technology, as most of the production equipment at its 12-inch P3 fab has been sold to Globalfoundries and Texas Instruments, will end production at the fab at the end of the first quarter of 2013.

The decision will also mean that Powerchip will officially drop out of the commodity DRAM market, said industry watchers.

Meanwhile, Powerchip revealed that it has received approval from its creditor banks to extend the maturity dates of over two-thirds of its medium- to long-term loans. However, the memory chip vendor did not disclose the total amount of its debts.

After liquidating the P3 fab, Powerchip will focus on providing foundry services for non-memory ICs, specialty DRAM and other niche-market memory chips utilizing its P1 and P2 plants, which have a combined capacity of 80,000 12-inch wafers a month.
