GE to switch from Verizon to AT&T for auotomobile connectivity

Tuesday, February 26, 2013

General Motors and Verizon have had a great working relationship for quite some time now, but it looks as if AT&T 4G LTE Connectivity has created a bit of a triangle for the automaker. Specifically, for some of the 2015 Buick, Cadillac, Chevy and GMC models, while there are no confirmations yet about the other models. Perhaps they will stick with Verizon or perhaps AT7T will win them over as well. Time will tell on that, however Verizon is probably not real happy about inviting a third wheel into the union.

The reason for the AT&T 4G LTE Connectivity is for embedded services for the select models. What this means is no smart phone required, your car, in essence will be the smart phone and also a Wi-Fi hotspot so you can get real time traffic or vehicle updates and video streaming for rear passenger entertainment systems . While having connection in cars is being done all ready, this will be the first time for 4GE LTE services to be offered. For those of you who don’t keep up on this type of technology, 4GE is significantly faster and more responsive than 3G, especially the 3G T-Mobile services that Audi offer and also more so than the 3G Sprint services that are used to Chrysler’s Uconnect system.

General Motor’s initiatives in bringing faster connectivity  and developing cars that also work as mobile devices opens new doors of opportunity for implementing new features into the vehicles we can look forward spending our commuting time  in. It will also save money from having to pay additional to be connected via smart phone services such as what Ford is doing with SYNC, Chrysler is doing with Uconnect and Kia is doing with UVO. So, less money, faster service and additional options give us all something to look forward to over the next couple of years.
