Samsung Electronics may invest JPY10 billion (US$107 million) in Sharp, according to industry rumors.
The rumors have yet to indicate when the investment will take place, but there is speculation that Samsung's interest is likely based on Sharp's development of IGZO panel technology, which is expected to be used in various upcoming Apple products.
Samsung and Sharp may also work together on other panel technology such as AMOLED and Full HD TFT LCDs for use in smartphones during 2013 as well as chip module manufacturing, added the rumors.
The possible investment would also allow Samsung to hold about a 3% stake in the electronics maker. While Samsung's investment would help Sharp tackle its current financial challenges, the company is still expected to report major losses in the first quarter of 2013.
