Lenovo reportedly plans to build up its IC design capability by increasing the number of staff of its IC development department from the current 10 to 100 by the end of the second quarter of 2013.
The expansion is part of Lenovo's plans to integrate its upstream and downstream supply capacity for the production of smartphones and tablets, the paper indicated.
Lenovo's thrust into the IC design business is unlikely to bring significant impacts to MediaTek's operations in the short term due to the Taiwan-based firm's high penetration rate in China's smartphone solution market, EDN said.
MediaTek aims to ship 200 million smartphone solutions in 2013, the paper quoted the company's president Hsieh Ching-chiang as saying.
