Samsung Display has reportedly dropped pricing for its 40-inch TV panels in the China market in order to compete with makers of 39-inch panels such as Innolux Corporation and AU Optronics (AUO).
The 39-inch panels have posed challenges towards panel makers' shipments of 37-, 40- and 42-inch panel products in China, giving Taiwan-based panel makers an advantage over other makers, said the sources.
Innolux in particular has shipped over one million 39-inch TV panels a month to China-based TV vendors due to the technology's popularity in the China market, added the sources.
At present, a Samsung 40-inch open cell TV panel is priced between US$155-160, about US$5 more expensive than a 39-inch one, but is expected to drop to about the same price as the 39-inch units.
The sources also said Samsung's investment in Sharp is likely to give Samsung stable supply of 40-inch TV panels in order to stay competitive against the 39-inch units.
