Many memory module makers have discontinued developing USB 2.0 flash drives since the second quarter, and now have new products all featuring the SuperSpeed USB 3.0 interface, according to industry sources.
The proportion of USB 3.0 flash drives of total drives shipped to the market is still small. Only 10% of the total available USB flash drives on the market feature SuperSpeed USB 3.0, but the ratio will likely climb to 40% at the end of 2013, the sources indicated.
The market for USB 3.0 flash drives is expected to boom in 2013, as the difference in price between USB 2.0 and USB 3.0 drives narrows to spur demand for the latter, faster interface, the sources said.
In other news, sources at NAND flash controller suppliers have pointed out that orders are flowing back. The sources also observed that many of their flash device customers put increasing focus on high-ASP products.
