Computex expects 40,000 visitors

Tuesday, June 4, 2013

Computex Taipei 2013, which will run from June 4-8, is expected to attract 40,000 international buyers and create business opportunities worth US$25 billion. The show will host some 1,700 exhibitors occupying 5,000 booths. Firms including Intel, Microsoft, Acer, Asustek Computer, Gigabyte, Corning, Nvidia, ECS, Broadcom, Compal Electronics, Delta Electronics and Bayer are all expected to exhibit their latest technologies at the show.

As in recent years, the hottest trend will be ultra-mobile and industry leaders will continue to promote their vision. At the higher end of the market, Intel is expected to highlight its new Haswell platform with an assortment of third-generation ultrabooks. Nvidia will be showing off its Tegra 4 family of processors on the tablet and smartphone side of things, and even some China-based players will offer glimpses of what can be accomplished at the lower-end of the mobile market. China-based ARM-architecture IC design houses, including Rockchip Electronics, Allwinner Technology, Nufront and Actions Semiconductor, will all showcase IC solutions at the show.

The one thing all players in the mobile industry agree on is that the future is touch, and Computex will be abuzz with the latest touch technologies and products. Touchscreen products are already a major profit and sales driver for IT vendors and their importance will only continue to increase. For Acer, touchscreen models already accounted for 12% of its total notebook shipments in the first quarter of 2013 and the percentage is expected to rise to 20% in the second quarter, 50% for the entire year in 2014 and 70% in 2015.

However, no matter how popular the mobile market is, there will still be plenty going on in the desktop PC market. Motherboard companies like Gigabyte and ECS are increasingly tailoring their products to the gaming and DIY markets and thus differentiating their products through their own technology implementations, so features vary considerably between vendors. Motherboard companies will also be offering their respective takes on industry-wide initiatives, such as Intel's Next Unit of Computing (NUC), a small form factor PC design promoted by Intel.

Lastly, it is worth reminding new visitors that it pays to investigate every nook and cranny of Computex to discover the sheer variety of ways in which each segment of the IT industry is adapting to the ever-changing environment.
