SanDisk has further enhanced its SSD product line for consumers and PC makers, and is looking to become one of the world's top-three SSD suppliers in 2014, according to Kevin Conley, senior VP and GM of Client Storage Solutions at the flash memory vendor.

At the ongoing Computex Taipei 2013 trade fair, SanDisk showcased a lineup of new SSDs for technology enthusiasts and gamers. The company also demonstrated OEM SSDs designed for ultra-thin notebooks and tablets. All these new models are built with SanDisk's 19nm manufacturing process technology.

Conley disclosed that more than 60% of SanDisk's annual revenues are generated by its OEM business, and about 65% of the OEM business revenues are produced by sales generated from its eMMC product line. The company is looking to pour considerable effort into its SSD business in 2013, Conley said.

SanDisk expects sales of its SSDs to account for about 15% of company revenues in 2013, with sales generated from the OEM sector exceeding those through the distribution channel, according to Conley.

SanDisk stepped into the SSD field two years ago, when its market share was low at less than 1%, Conley said. SanDisk has now become one of the world's top-five SSD producers in 2013, and is confident that it will break into the top three in 2014, Conley indicated.

In addition, Conley pointed out some challenges facing Taiwan's dedicated memory module firms, which have tapped the SSD market, including an inconsistent supply from NAND flash chipmakers and their lack of technology for SSD production. In comparison, SanDisk obtains a steady supply from Toshiba, which it partners with for the production of NAND chips, and has developed close relationships with OEM companies, Conley said.
