Sony unveils ultrabooks using carbon-fiber reinforced plastic chassis

Friday, June 7, 2013

Sony has announced several new ultrabooks at Computex 2013 including the Vaio Pro series, featuring carbon-fiber reinforced plastic chassis and weighing only 870g for the 11-inch model and 1.06kg for the 13-inch model.

In addition to Sony, Dell and Lenovo have also released products using carbon-fiber reinforced plastics. Chairman of Taiwan-based chassis maker Catcher Technology Allen Horng also believe that carbon-fiber-reinforced chassis will be widely adopted in IT products in 2013.

However, carbon-fiber reinforced plastics will still need more time to become standardized like aluminum alloy or plastic chassis since prices and production efficiency have both not yet reached an acceptable level for volume production, causing carbon-fiber notebooks to be priced on average above US$1,000, far above mainstream prices.

Sony has also unveiled its Vaio Duo 13 convertible with an industrial design similar to the SurfSlider of its 11-inch Duo 11. The notebook can be converted into a tablet and comes with a digitizer stylus for input.
