Microsoft introduces Windows 8.1

Friday, June 7, 2013

Microsoft has showed several new functions and designs for its upcoming Windows 8.1 at its Computex 2013 conference.

At the conference, Microsoft's corporate vice president of OEM division, Nick Parker noted that in addition to Acer's 8-inch Iconia W3, there will be many other Windows-based small-size tablets using Intel's fourth-generation Core processor, high-definition displays and convertible designs available for the year-end holidays.

Currently, there are about 3,200 certified Windows 8 devices worldwide and 60 of them adopt touch panels. There are around 80,000 apps available in the Windows 8 store with 94% of them supporting both x86 and ARM architectures.

However, when commenting on recent market rumors that Microsoft may reduce its Windows 8.1 licensing fees, at a press meeting after the conference, Parker did not make a direct response and only said that the company has offered its Small Screen Touch Program to partners, providing free Office software for 7- to 10.1-inch tablets.
