Snapdragon 800 strikes design win with LG Optimus

Thursday, June 20, 2013

LG is working on another Optimus G flagship handset and has revealed it will use a Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 quad-core processor.

‘LG’s G series device powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 processors will redefine the smartphone experience through stunning performance, rich graphics and outstanding battery efficiency,’ said the company in a press release.

It also outlined how the Qualcomm 800’s onboard 4G LTE connectivity will ‘be even faster by maximizing spectrum bandwidth to increase data speeds and reduce latency.’

‘With a powerful combination of LG’s core smartphone technologies and the Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 processor, we are taking a significant step forward in the mobile experience,’ said Dr. Jong-seok Park, president and CEO of LG.

‘The result of this collaboration will in many ways be the industry’s best smartphone by which all other devices will be measured.’

LG says the Qualcomm Sanpdragon 800 chip will offer a 75 per cent improvement on battery efficiency from its Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 Pro powered quad-core devices. ‘The Snapdragon 800 processor will feature many of the industry’s leading technologies for the ultimate mobile experience,’ it added.

We had some brief hands-on time with the Optimus G Pro at Mobile World Congress in January and it was a fairly impressive device, at the time being one of the few around with a Qualcomm 600.

It’s difficult to take LG’s claims seriously, however. Certainly there’s nothing wrong with Qualcomm’s hardware, but LG has a habit of shooting itself in the foot, at least from our point of view, by being slow to bring its devices to market outside Asia (if it does at all), giving them too high a price point and filling them with bloatware and unappealing interface tweaks.

We’ve still not seen anything of the Optimus G Pro since it was announced and it’s getting to the point now where it looks like it won’t get a release over here, or if it does it’ll follow the Optimus Vu in turning up way too late to the party.
