STATS ChipPAC, which provides IC assembly and test
services to semiconductor companies and electronics OEMs, has unveiled
plans to consolidate manufacturing at its production units in Kuala
Lumpur and Qingpu, Shanghai into one plant. The
Malaysia unit will be closed by the end of 2014, following the transfer
of manufacturing into the Shanghai facility in China, STATS ChipPAC
indicated. "The announced plan will consolidate our
manufacturing footprint into larger scale plants and achieve a more
competitive cost structure over the longer term," noted STATS ChipPAC
president and CEO Tan Lay Koon in a statement. STATS
ChipPAC also disclosed that the closing of its Malaysia plant will
affect approximately 1,100 employees, which present about 11% of the
company's total global workforce.
