Samsung Electronics will launch the Galaxy S4 mini, a 4.3-inch mini version of the flagship smartphone model Galaxy S4, in the third quarter of 2013, and
Taiwan-based vendor HTC will launch the 4.3-inch HTC One mini, a mini version of flagship model HTC One, in the same quarter as well, while China-based vendors Lenovo and Huawei Device plan to follow suit by launching mini versions with 4.3- to 4.5-inch screens in the second half of 2013, according to Taiwan-based supply chain makers.
Mini versions previously launched by international smartphone vendors were significantly inferior to corresponding flagship models in hardware specification and intended to cater to entry-level and mid-range market segments, the sources indicated. However, the Galaxy S4 mini and HTC One mini are only slightly less competitive with Galaxy S4 and HTC One respectively in screen, processor and camera specifications and have the same industrial design and software functions, the sources pointed out. The two mini versions will be positioned as mid-range to high-end smartphones, the sources noted.
Offering of mini versions of flagship smartphone models can maximize the benefit from using R&D and marketing resources and therefore has become a trend for international vendors, the sources pointed out.
