Global chip sales rise 4.6%

Tuesday, July 2, 2013

The Semiconductor Industry Association (SIA) has announced that worldwide sales of semiconductors grew 4.6% sequentially in May 2013, and identified the growth as "the largest sequential monthly increase in sales for the industry since March 2010."

SIA disclosed that May semiconductor sales came to US$24.7 billion, up from US$23.62 billion in April.

Global chip sales for May 2013 were 1.3% higher than the US$24.4 billion posted a year ago, and year-to-date sales were 1.5% larger than they were at the same point in 2012.

"May was an unambiguously strong month for the global semiconductor industry, with growth across all regions and particularly encouraging increases in the Americas and Asia Pacific," said SIA president and CEO Brian Toohey in a statement. "Sales have remained ahead of last year's pace throughout 2013, indicating the increasing resiliency of the market."

Sales in May increased compared to April in Asia Pacific (5.9%), the Americas (5.6%), Japan (0.8%) and Europe (0.3%), marking the first time since September 2012 that all four regions have seen sequential monthly growth, SIA said.

Compared to the same month in 2012, sales in May increased in Asia Pacific (5.8%), the Americas (3.0%) and Europe (0.1%), but fell steeply in Japan (minus 18.4%) largely because of the devaluation of the Japanese yen, according to SIA.
