SanDisk VP for Asia Pacific Gavin Wu has expressed optimism about demand for either standalone or embedded SSDs during the second half of 2013, citing growth in both the DIY and ultrabook markets.
Wu indicated that in the retail market, SSD sales are set to pick up in the second half of 2013 on rising demand coming from China's PC DIY market. Meanwhile, the penetration of SSDs in ultrabooks is expected to grow at a fast pace, Wu said.
NAND flash based solutions and products are being deployed in smartphones, tablets as well as other PC applications, Wu commented. The overall demand outlook appears promising, Wu indicated.
Acknowledging the booming market for mobile devices including smartphones and tablets, SanDisk has placed increased focus on embedded memory solutions such as SSDs and eMMC devices, Wu pointed out. The embedded product line has been enhanced for both the OEM sector and distribution channel, Wu added.
SanDisk is partnering with Toshiba to develop flash memory chips. Toshiba recently announced plans to establish the second phase of Fab 5 at its Yokkaichi facility in Mie, Japan with building work to complete in summer 2014.. The expanded facility will produce chips on more advanced nodes and 3D NAND memory.
Fab 5 is a joint venture wafer fabrication plant between Toshiba and SanDisk.
