Nook tablets expected to see strong demand in 3Q13

Friday, July 12, 2013

Barnes & Noble has reduced the price of its 7-inch 8GB Nook HD from US$199 to US$129 and the 8.9-inch Nook HD+ from US$269 to US$149 as the company has decided to quit developing tablets.

The new prices are expected to affect demand for other tablet products in North America in the third quarter, according to market watchers.

Barnes & Noble's Nook shipments dropped from about one million units in the fourth quarter of 2012 to only 700,000 units in the first quarter of 2013, and are expected to have dropped to only 500,000-600,000 units in the second quarter due to fierce competition from other tablet players.

The market watchers believe Barnes & Noble's absence is unlikely to significantly impact Taiwan-based ODMs due to its limited shipments. Currently, the tablets are manufactured by Pegatron Technology
