Samsung Electronics has reported record operating profits for the second quarter of 2013, with all businesses except its mobile business posting profit growth sequentially.
Samsung's IT & mobile communications (IM) division, which its mobile communications business belongs to, shrank 3% sequentially in the second quarter, while the vendor's component business enjoyed a 58% sequential increase.
Nonetheless, as Samsung's IM unit accounts for the majority of the vendor's overall operating profits, Samsung's total operating profits for second-quarter 2013 grew 9% sequentially to a record KRW9.53 trillion (US$8.5 billion).
Samsung's IM division generated operating profits of KRW6.28 trillion in the second quarter, down from KRW6.51 trillion in the prior quarter, but up significantly from the KRW4.13 trillion registered in the second quarter of 2012.
Sales of Samsung's IM unit in second-quarter 2013 grew 8% sequentially and 52% from a year earlier to KRW35.54 trillion, while the vendor's overall sales soared to KRW57.46 trillion.
Samsung's device solutions (DS) business consisting of its semiconductor and LCD divisions saw its operating profits increase to KRW2.92 trillion in second-quarter 2013, from KRW1.85 trillion in the first quarter and KRW1.69 trillion a year ago. Sales of the component business grew 8% sequentially and were almost flat on year to KRW17.05 trillion.
Meanwhile, operating profits generated from Samsung's consumer electronics division jumped 83% on quarter in the second quarter of 2013. Revenues for the unit encompassing its TV and digital appliances businesses rose 14% on quarter to KRW12.78 trillion.
