BlackBerry, Nokia no plans to launch 5-inch phone until end of 2013

Monday, July 29, 2013 BlackBerry, Nokia and Apple are unlikely to roll out 5-inch or above models until the end of 2013 or in the first half of 2014, according to industry sources.

Motorola is the latest branded vendor to join the 5-inch club by releasing two 5-inch models in the US. Rival vendors including Samsung Electronics, Sony Mobile Communications, LG Electronics and HTC have all launched 5-inch or above models as their flagship smartphones, the sources indicated.

China-based branded vendors, including Huawei, Lenovo, ZTE and Coolpad, have also climbed on the bandwagon for 5-inch models, added the sources.

However, Apple, BlackBerry and Nokia have not yet released any models with 5-inch displays, due either to a lack of application support or due to their product develop roadmaps, the sources commented.

Nokia, which has just unveiled its 4.7-inch Lumia model, reportedly is developing a larger display model supporting WP8 GDR3 (general distribution release 3) which is expected at the end of 2013, the sources indicated.

BlackBerry is expected to step into the 5-inch segment with the release its next-generation flagship model, the BlackBerry A10, in the fourth quarter of 2013. The A10 is reportedly to be equipment a 5-inch AMOLED display, revealed the sources.

The chances of Apple rolling out larger-display models in the second half of 2013 or the first half of 2014 is slim, said the sources.
