Samsung officially showed off its new massive 98-inch S9 TV in Berlin at the IFA show, about a week after releasing details on its Samsung Tomorrow website. According to that site, the monster TV is aimed at commercial use — likely with a commercial price tag to go with it. Sales of these types of TVs are rare enough that Samsung actually called out by name the first European consumer who had purchased a slightly smaller version.
In total, that makes five models in Samsung's UHD lineup: 55, 65, 85, 98, and 110-inch models. The 55- and 65-inch models received pricing today, at approximately $5,270 and $7,900 respectively (€4,000 and €6,000). Back in March, Samsung put a price tag on the 85-inch model at $39,999.
4K televisions have been pouring out of every corner of the industry this year, with models from Sony, Panasonic, Sharp, TCL, Westinghouse and even newcomer Seiki.
Of those we've reviewed, it's clear that UHD in and of itself is not enough to make a TV "good." In fact, the Seiki we reviewed had abysmal performance in many respects, despite having four times the resolution of HD. However, Samsung's strong background in TVs makes it likely that it will be competing in the upper end of the UHD market.
