Taiwan-based flash memory card and drive maker Gigastone has stepped into development and production of NAND flash controller ICs, according to company chairman Wang Li-min.
In order to develop and produce NAND flash controller ICs, Gigastone has recruited about 20 experts and purchased related patents and photo mask technology from Taiwan-based IC design house Integrated Technology Express, Wang said.
While flash cards and drives account for more than 70% of Gigastone's consolidated revenues, its Smart Box, a Wi-Fi wireless storage device with portable power supply, is a product with large growth in revenue, Wang said. Gigastone has begun supplying Smart Box to Japan-based mobile telecom carrier KDDI and Wal-Mart, Wang noted.
Gigastone procures NAND flash chips from Samsung Electronics, SanDisk and SK Hynix. The company recorded consolidated revenues of NT$7.592 billion (US$255 million) in 2012, and has forecast revenues of NT$8.370 billion for 2013 and aims to attain annual consolidated revenues of NT$30 billion in three years.
