Nokia and BlackBerry are to take different approaches to retire their old mobile operating platforms due to varied market conditions.
After signing a merger deal with Microsoft, Nokia eventually will focus on Windows Phone, while accelerating the retirement processes of its Symbian and MeeGo platforms, said the sources.
Nokia originally planned to continue supporting the operations of Symbian until 2016, but has recently decided to suspend its support for both Symbian and MeeGo starting 2014 as sales of Symbian-based handsets have been declining at a pace much fast than expected, the sources revealed.
While Symbian- and MeeGo-based devices will be able to continue downloading prevailing applications after 2014, Nokia will not release new upgrades or new applications for the two platforms, added the sources.
Additionally, Microsoft is also expected to discontinue its support for Windows Phone 7.x platform in 2014, said the sources.
Meanwhile, BlackBerry is expected to continue operating dual platforms, the BlackBerry 7 and BlackBerry 10, for a while given that sales of BlackBerry 7-based models still account for a large portion of its total smartphone shipments currently, revealed the sources.
Current enterprise users of BlackBerry 7-based smartphones are also reluctant to upgrade their platforms, slowing down the transition from BlackBerry 7 to BlackBerry 10, commented the sources
