The global smartphone applications processor market continued to show strength and grew 44% on year to US$4.4 billion in the second quarter of 2013, while the tablet processor market registered an impressive 46% on-year increase to reach US$759 million, according to Strategy Analytics.
Qualcomm, Apple, MediaTek, Samsung Electronics and Spreadtrum Communications captured the top-five revenue share spots in the smartphone processor market in the second quarter. Qualcomm maintained its dominance in the smartphone applications processor market with 53% revenue share followed by Apple with a 15% share and MediaTek with an 11% share in the quarter.
"Strategy Analytics estimates that low-cost suppliers MediaTek and Spreadtrum together captured over one-third volume share in the smartphone applications processor market in the second quarter 2013, thanks to the smartphone boom in emerging markets," said senior analyst Sravan Kundojjala in a statement. "MediaTek and Spreadtrum's improving global footprint coupled with their maturing product portfolio could spell a threat to global players such as Qualcomm, Broadcom, Nvidia and Intel."
In the tablet applications processor market, Apple continued its lead with a 34% revenue share in the second quarter of 2013, followed by Samsung and MediaTek - each with close to 10% revenue share, Strategy Analytics said in a separate report. Samsung had a narrow lead over MediaTek in the second quarter.
"MediaTek, a late comer to the tablet applications processor market, made strong progress in a relatively short time and captured the number three revenue share spot in the second quarter 2013," Kundojjala noted. "MediaTek scored significant design-wins with Acer, Asus and Lenovo. Strategy Analytics comments that MediaTek's tactics of releasing stand-alone applications processors for the tablet market coupled with its reference design know-how have propelled its share to double-digits in the tablet applications processor market."
Marvell and Qualcomm also made good progress during the second quarter, thanks to their high-profile tablet design-wins, Stuart Robinson, director of Strategy Analytics' handset component technologies service also commented. "During second quarter 2013, Strategy Analytics believes that Intel with its Bay Trail chip and Nvidia with its Tegra 4 chip are also poised for tablet applications processor market share growth in the second half of 2013."
