SK Hynix announced on October 15 that the company has established a R&D center in Taiwan to strengthen its global R&D competence and customer support.
The new Taiwan R&D center will focus on intensifying SK Hynix's competence in development of high value-added NAND flash memory products. Located in Hsinchu, SK Hynix's Taiwan R&D center is also expected to become a base of the technology support for its China- and Taiwan-based clients.
NAND solution demand for high-end mobile devices and servers, including cloud servers, has been rising recently, SK Hynix noted. The role of controllers has therefore become more important to efficiently interface central processing units with NAND flash, the firm said.
SK Hynix also indicated the company's previous acquisition of US-based LAMD has strengthened its competitiveness in the flash device controller field. SK Hynix added the company has been shipping SSDs equipped with its in-house developed controllers since the third quarter of 2013.
"SK Hynix will combine the existing R&D competence and the capability of this Taiwan R&D center to strengthen the competitiveness in supplying total NAND solutions and actively respond to various demands from the market and the customers," the company said in a statement.
