Thursday, November 14, 2013

Samsung Electronics Co., the world's top memory chip maker, and its smaller local rival SK hynix Inc., continued to dominate the global dynamic random access memory (DRAM) market in the third quarter of the year, industry data showed Wednesday.

According to the data compiled by market researcher DRAMeXchange, Samsung accounted for 37.1 percent, or US$3.45 billion, of the global DRAM market in the July-September period to rank first among the world's major chip makers.

Samsung's third-quarter share was up 4.4 percentage points from the previous quarter, the data showed.

SK hynix grabbed a 28.5 percent share in the global DRAM market in the same quarter with $2.65 billion in sales, but its market share fell 1.5 percentage points from the previous quarter, according to the data.

All told with smaller local firms included, the combined share of South Korean chipmakers in the global DRAM market came to 67.7 percent.

Micron Technology Inc. ranked third with sales of $2.44 billion in the cited quarter and a 26.2 percent share in the world market.

The global DRAM market grew 9 percent on-quarter to reach $9.3 billion in the third quarter and is expected to jump 40 percent this year from last year, DRAMeXchange forecast.
