Mobile DRAM revenues amounted to nearly US$3.3 billion in the third quarter of 2013, rising about 14% from US$2.89 billion in the prior quarter, according to DRAMeXchange.
DRAMeXchange credited the growth to higher smartphone shipments, as well as the impact of SK Hynix' fire-damaged plant on prices for the memory chips.
Mobile DRAM accounted for more than 30% of the overall DRAM market revenues in the third quarter, DRAMeXchange observed. The proportion is set to expand further, thanks to the increasing popularity of smartphones and other mobile devices.
Samsung Electronics continued to lead the global mobile DRAM market with a more than 50% share in the third quarter of 2013, followed by SK Hynix with 25%, according to DRAMeXchange. The pair took a combined 76.3% share of the global mobile DRAM market in the third quarter.
Micron Technology's takeover of Elpida Memory allowed the US company to expand its mobile DRAM market share to 22.1% from only 3.4% in the second quarter, DRAMeXchange said. Micron completed its Elpida acquisition in July 2013.
