Having acquired Fujitsu's MCU unit, Spansion is set to expand its presence in Japan with a focus on industrial and other application-specific applications.
Spansion in August 2013 completed its acquisition of Fujitsu Semiconductor's microcontroller and analog business, which was announced in April. Since the deal, Spansion's first MCU product line was introduced recently.
Spansion has combined its proprietary embedded charge trap (eCT) flash technology with Fujitsu's expertise in embedded MCUs for auto applications to develop a complete family of MCUs addressing high performance and low power needs for industrial applications such as factory automation, building management and motor control.
Spansion's first MCU lineup, based on the ARM Cortex-M core, has made its first debut at the ongoing Embedded Technology show in Japan.
Before its sale to Spansion, Fujitsu's MCU unit focused mainly on Japan's automotive market with customers including the world's major car vendors. Industry observers believe that Spansion regards Japan as the first target market for its MCU business.
Spansion may use Fujitsu Semiconductor's 55nm, 65nm and 90nm processes to produce its MCUs, the observers said. However, Spansion is likely to approach other foundry partners as Fujitsu has been cutting its investment in the semiconductor division, the sources indicated.
