Western Digital has developed a new hybrid drive
technology, integrating an 120GB solid state drive (SSD) and an 1TB hard
disc drive (HDD) into a 2.5-inch hard drive. The company will mainly
push the technology to niche markets such as gaming PC products. Some
upstream suppliers pointed out that the hard drive maker is also
negotiating with PC brand vendors for the adoption in high-end gaming
notebooks. The new technology will allow users to have a
complete 120GB solid state drive on their systems instead of previous
hybrid hard disc drive technologies, which only offer 8-16GB of caching
space. The sources pointed out that the new hybrid
drive technology will have a high end price due to its dual drive
characteristic and whether consumers are able to accept its price will
be a key criteria for its success. Currently, Western
Digital is placing the technology under its high-end Black HDD series
and is considering to extend the technologies into its mid-range and
entry-level product lines.
