Following the release of the Nike+Sportwatch and Fuelband SE smartwatch in 2013, Nike plans to launch a new smartwatch in the first half of 2014, according to sources in Taiwan's supply chain.
Nike's new wearable smart device is currently under trial production at EMS firm Flextronics International, the sources added.
Currently accounting for 30% of the global sports gear market, Nike has an advantage over rivals such as Adidas in the wearable smart device market, said sources.
Adidas released recently its first smartwatch, the miCoach Smart Run, which supports iOS, Android and Windows, priced at US$399 compared to US$149 for the Fuelband SE, which supports only iOS. The miCoach is manufactured by Taiwan-based Mitac International.
According to Digitimes Research, global shipments of smartwatches are expected to reach 24.15 million units in 2016 with an ASP of US$100.
