Toshiba relocate Notebook R & D to Taiwan

Wednesday, February 5, 2014 Toshiba has started shifting its notebook R&D center in Japan to Taiwan and will expand its Taiwan R&D staff of over 100 engineers, according to Taiwan-based notebook supply chain makers. The shift is due to Taiwan's strong capability and comparatively low costs for notebook development, the sources claimed. While R&D costs in China are lower than in Taiwan, Toshiba has not shifted R&D to China primarily because of worries about negative political impacts due to the considerably bad relations between Japan and China currently, the sources indicated. Toshiba has more than 90% of its notebooks produced by Taiwan-based ODMs, the sources noted. For notebooks shipped or to be shipped in 2014, Quanta Computer and Compal Electronics have obtained orders mainly for 15-inch models, and will account for 30% of total shipments, Pegatron has landed orders for 14-inch models and will account for 20-25% of total shipments, and Inventec 17-inch models, the sources said. Toshiba shipped 12.388 million notebooks for a global market share of 7.1% in 2013, and is expected to ship 11.08 million units for a share of 6.5% in 2014.
