About 56% of tablet vendors' sales are expected to come from 7- to 8-inch units in 2014, down from about 70% in 2013, due to increased competition from large-size smartphones and expected sales of larger-size tablets.
Throughout 2013, smaller size tablets in the 7- to 8-inch segment increasingly dominated the tablet market, pushing down sales of units in the 8-inch to 10-inch segment. However, as smartphone sizes have increased to between 5- to 6.99-inch, demand for smaller-size tablets has been on the decline causing consumers to re-think their position on larger-size tablet purchases.
Additionally, tablet vendors are expected to release more units in the 8-inch and above segment during 2014, with some vendors expected to push units sized 11- to 13.9-inch, thus adding to the decrease in sales from the 7- to 8-inch segment, the observers noted.
By 2018, about 9% of tablet sales are expected to be for sizes 11- to 13.9-inch, the observers added
