The TD-LTE chip market in China is expected to grow robustly starting the second quarter of 2014 as chipset vendors including Qualcomm, MediaTek, Marvell Technology, Broadcom, Intel, Nvidia and Tsinghua Unigroup are expected to launch an array of new TD-LTE chips, according to industry sources.
Qualcomm and Marvell appear to have led rival vendors in the race to win more orders since the two companies have already deepened their deployments in the segment.
However, how fast the market will expand will hinge on China Mobile and other China-based telecom operators, since they are assigned to set strategies to develop the TD-LTE industry, said the sources.
The China government may also give preference to local chipset vendors in order to accelerate development of its TD-LTE supply chain, the sources noted.
Tsinghua Unigroup has strengthened its capability through the acquisition of local chipset players, including Spreadtrum Communications and RDA Microelectronics, the sources indicated.
