U.S. PlayStation CEO will step down

Friday, March 7, 2014 Sony Computer Entertainment America President and CEO Jack Tretton will step down from his position at the end of the month, ending a nearly 20-year run during which he helped launch the company's PlayStation brand. In a statement released Thursday, Sony says the move was based on a "mutual agreement" not to renew Tretton's contract. Shawn Layden, a 15-year PlayStation veteran and chief operating officer for Sony Network Entertainment International, will replace Tretton starting April 1. "Working at SCEA for the past 19 years has been the most rewarding experience of my career," said Tretton in a statement. "Although I will deeply miss the talented team at SCEA and the passion demonstrated every day by our fans, I'm very excited about starting the next chapter of my career." Tretton worked with SCEA since its inception in 1995, playing a key role in every PlayStation device launch since, including last November's release of the PlayStation 4. Sales of the PS4 have exceeded expectations since its arrival, topping 6 million in global sales.
