BYD plug-in hybrid hit record sales in China

Tuesday, March 25, 2014

BYD Auto races to the top with its second-generation dual mode plug-in hybrid sedan Qin, hitting a sales record of 6,000 units in February, which accounts for more than half of the Chinese new-energy vehicle market.

The numbers are still expected to climb up as the automaker qualified for green-vehicle incentives and received licences to sell its new energy vehicles in both Shanghai and Beijing.

Moreover, earlier news about the Chinese government's commitment for clean air and fuel efficient technologies in the form of consumer and government purchasing incentives are launching a new era in the domestic automobile industry.

As a dual mode vehicle, the QIN features a 70Km all-electric driving range, and a fuel consumption of 1.6L for every one-hundred kilometres. It accelerates to 100Km/h in 5.9 seconds. This is said to be only the first of the electric vehicles in BYD's line-up, with an electric version of the S7-styled SUV, named Tang, set to be released later this year.

The QIN is currently available to domestic Chinese and Latin American markets. BYD is reportedly planning to expand with exported versions in the coming years.
