Auto tuned antenna enhances 4G performance

Tuesday, June 17, 2014

Infineon Technologies AG has released a series of antenna aperture tuning switches, which claim to enable highest data rate operations in relevant LTE bands in the smallest packages available on the market for smartphones and other portable devices.

The BGA1xGN10 ICs are based on the company's 130nm RF CMOS switch technology, allowing the development of antennas in smartphones of reduced size and broader frequency range. It boasts improved impedance matching for a single antenna across a wide frequency range, therefore reducing power stress on the transmitter side and increasing sensitivity on the receiver side.

They are designed for high ruggedness, low parasitics and highest linearity in order to withstand critical mismatch conditions at the antenna. The devices feature generic GPIO interfaces for smooth antenna control and system integration. They are available in the following switch configurations: BGSA12GN10 SPDT, BGSA13GN10 SP3T, and BGSA14GN10 SP4T.

The ICs are housed in a ROHS-compliant plastic package measuring 1.5mmx1.1mm, 60 per cent smaller in size compared to CSP-type devices on the market. The company identified dimension as a critical issue, as smartphones are crammed with more and more features and multiple LTE bands while antenna and PCB space remains very limited.

Engineering samples are available, while volume production is scheduled for July.
