NAND flash controller vendors Solid State System (3S) and Skymedi both have geared up efforts to venture into the eMMC controller market amid high demand for the controller chips from the smartphone and tablet sectors, according to industry sources.
3S announced recently that its eMMC v4.51 controller, the SSS5551, has been verified on a number of MediaTek's and Qualcomm's embedded chipset platforms, and has been listed on the AVL (approved vendor list) of China-based SoC providers Rockchip Electronics and Actions Semiconductor.
3S is expected to snap up a number of design-wins for its SSS5551 controllers in the second half of 2014, according to company CEO Tim Hu.
Currently, 3S is working on next-generation 5.x eMCC controller that will come with the latest error correction methods, said the company.
Meanwhile, Skymedi's eMMC controller chips reportedly have entered the design-in process with a Japan-based games console supplier, said the industry sources.
