United Microelectronics Corporation (UMC) plans to ramp up its capacity for 28nm 12-inch wafers to 12,000 units by the fourth quarter of 2014 and further expand to 25,000 units in 2015.
UMC said it currently has five 28nm products for three clients, including MediaTek and expects the number of 28nm clients and products to further expand in 2015.
Production of 28nm chips will account for 3% of total sales in the third quarter of 2014 and rise to 5% in the fourth quarter.
Despite competition for 28nm processes from China-based Semiconductor Manufacturing International Corporation (SMIC), UMC is confident about its 28nm HKMG process, believing can win a bigger market share in the segment.
UMC also expects its gross margin to further improve in the next few quarters along with the rising yield rates of its 28nm processes.
