New iPhone to affect competitor sales

Wednesday, August 13, 2014

The soon-to-be-launched new iPhone is forecast to impact the market shares of smartphone makers Samsung Electronics Co. and HTC Corp., according to the Taipei-based market information advisory firm TrendForce Corp.
Despite Samsung's plan to release its new Galaxy Note 4, TrendForce predicted in a statement Monday that the South Korean company's market share will drop to 28 percent in the third quarter, down from 33 percent at the beginning of the year, due to competition from the next-generation iPhone.

The iPhone 6 is due to be released Sept. 9 and will have a larger screen than its predecessors.

According to TrendForce, Samsung will probably not reach its goal of 350 million handset shipments for 2014.

Taiwan's HTC will also see a sharp decline, with shipments reaching fewer than 20 million units for 2014, even less than half of the shipments by Chinese smartphone vendor Xiaomi Corp., TrendForce predicted.

TrendForce, however, estimated that the market share of South Korea's LG Electronics Inc. could increase to 6.2 percent in the third quarter with the release of its G3 Stylus handset in September.

Chinese vendors are also seeing rapid growth.

Smartphone shipments of Xiaomi, Huawei, Lenovo, Coolpad and ZTE this year have already surpassed 30 million units each, according to TrendForce.

After buying Motorola Mobility earlier this year, Lenovo's smartphone shipments this year could surpass 90 million units, making it China's largest smartphone maker, followed by Huawei in second place with over 65 million units shipped, TrendForce said.
