Samsung Electronics reportedly has made a comeback into the supplier list for mobile RAM chips for Apple's next-generation iPhone slated for release in September, according to industry sources.
Apple made a drastic move to begin expelling Samsung from its supplier list for a number of key components, including application processors, mobile RAM, NAND flash chips and batteries, starting 2013, the sources noted.
Under this policy, Apple purchased mobile RAM from only SK Hynix and Elpida Memory (Micron Technology) for the iPhone 5 released in 2013, while removing Samsung, a long-term supplier, from the supplier list.
Recently, Apple has been asking Elpida/Micron and SK Hynix to ramp up supplies of mobile RAM, but the two firms have been reluctant to increase their shipments as chip prices offered by Apple are less than desired.
To ensure steady shipments of its new iPhones, Apple has had no choice but to add Samsung again into the supplier list for mobile RAM chip, added the sources.
