Price competition in the 4G solution market in China will heat up soon with Qualcomm unveiling its Snapdragon 210 CPU for entry-level 4G LTE smartphones, according to industry sources.
The release of the Snapdragon 210 will further strengthen Qualcomm's product portfolio in the entry- to mid-range solution segment as well as its leading market position in China, said the sources.
The Snapdragon 210 is expected to be available for US$9 a unit compared to US$15 tagged for comparable models offered by MediaTek, adding more pressure on the Taiwan-based chipset vendor, according to a Chinese-language Liberty Times report.
Marvell Technology has been focusing on niche 4G applications and could become the third-largest 4G solution vendor in China, the sources noted.
Spreadtrum Communications launched a dual-core 4G solution in the third quarter of 2014 and plans to release its first single-chip 4G solution in late 2014 or early 2015, the sources indicated.
The continual roll-outs of new 4G chips will also facilitate price reductions in the solution segment, added the sources.
