Toshiba announced smallest embedded eMMC process

Tuesday, October 7, 2014

Toshiba America Electronic Components Inc. has uncovered what it boasts as the world's smallest class of e-MMC embedded NAND flash memory products. According to the company, the devices integrate NAND chips fabricated with Toshiba's 15nm process technology and a controller to manage basic control functions for NAND applications into a single package.

By using the 15nm process technology, the product's package size is about 26 per cent smaller than comparable Toshiba products and offers faster read/write performance due to improvements in basic chip performance and controller optimisation, noted the company. The read speed is roughly eight per cent faster (max.), while the write speed is nearly 20 per cent faster (max.).

Demand continues to grow for large density NAND flash memory chips that support high resolution video and deliver enhanced storage. This is particularly true in the area of embedded memories with a controller function, which minimise development requirements and ease integration into system designs. Toshiba is meeting this demand by reinforcing its line-up of high performance and high density memory products, it indicated.

The JEDECe-MMC-compliant interface handles essential functions including writing block management, error correction and driver software. It simplifies system development, allowing manufacturers to minimise development costs and speed up time to market for recent and upgraded products. Additional features, among them BKOPS control, Cache Barrier, Cache Flushing Report and Large RPMB Write, are applied to the products to enhance usability, added Toshiba.

The 8-64GB products are sealed in a 153-ball FBGA package measuring 11 x 10mm and are suitable for a range of digital consumer products such as smartphones, tablets and wearable devices where miniaturisation and weight saving are a requirement, said the company. Embedded in a system, the 128GB products can record up to 16.3 hours of full spec HD video and 39.7 hours of standard definition video, Toshiba continued.

The chips support HS-MMC interface and operates from a power supply voltage from 2.7-3.6V (memory core) and 1.7-1.95V, 2.7-3.6V (interface). The devices has an operating temperature range of -25°C to 85°C.

Sample shipments of the 16GB products have started rolling out, with 8GB, 32GB, 64G and 128GB products to follow.
